Before the first card is played, each player declares their "call" — the minimum number of tricks they commit to winning in that round. You must call at least 1. Study your hand carefully: high cards, spades, and long suits in one color are your best assets. A good call is the foundation of a winning strategy.
The player to the dealer's right leads the first trick by playing any card. Other players must follow the same suit if they can. If you can't follow suit, you may play a spade (trump) or any other card. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick — unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins.
If you win at least as many tricks as your call, you score points equal to your call (e.g., call 4, win 4 or more = +4 points). Extra tricks beyond your call add 0.1 points each. If you fail to meet your call, you lose points equal to your call (e.g., call 4, win only 3 = -4 points). Precision matters — don't over-call or under-call.
